Harriet Zurndorfer

Harriet T. Zurndorfer is affiliated Fellow at LIAS, Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University. From 1978 to 2004 she was Universitaire Docente (Associate Professor) of Chinese History, Leiden University. In 1970 she did her M.A. in Chinese history, University of California, Berkeley, and thereafter, in 1977 she obtained her Ph.D. in Chinese history, University of California, Berkeley.

She is the author of Change and Continuity in Chinese Local History: The Development of Huizhou Prefecture 800-1800 (Leiden: E.J. Brill, 1989), China Bibliography: A Research Guide to Reference Works about China, Past and Present (Leiden: Brill Academic Publishers, 1995), [paperback edition published by the University of Hawaii Press, 1999]. Among others she has being editor (with Jos Gommans), Roots and Routes of Development in China and India:  Highlights of Fifty Years of the 'Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient' (1957-2007) (Leiden:  Brill, 2008).

Harriet Zurndorfer from 1991 to 2000 was the editor-in-chief of The Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient (JESHO), and since 1997 she is the founder and managing editor of Nan Nü: Men, Women and Gender in China.

Director of the Project 'China's Changing Gender Dynamics 1900-2015', sponsored by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation; Co-editor of  volume 2 of The Cambridge World History of Violence; Chair and Member of the European Fellowship Committee of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation since 2005; Member of  the Project 'General Research on East Asian Maritime History during the 16th and 17th Centuries', sponsored by the Japanese Foundation for the Promotion of Science (2010-14); Visiting Research Professor, Institute of  Modern History, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan (October 2009); Member of the Leverhulme Trust/London School of Economics--sponsored project 'Global Economic History Network' (2003- 2006); Visiting Fellowship to Kyoto University, Department of Southeast Asian Studies (May 2006); Visiting Professor, L'École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris (IV section; 'la Sorbonne'), (May 2002). Visiting Fellow, All Souls College, Oxford (Michelmas Term 2000).
